Island Campus Lecture Series: April

Please join us on April 26 (rescheduled from April 19) for our April Islands webinar. Together we explore citizen and community-driven science projects, and learn about how these projects are helping scientists to collect more data. We will be joined by two experts who will help outline the difference between citizen science, which mainly draws on the participation of a layperson, and community science, which relies on experts and specialists to provide guidance and assistance during data collection and analysis.

Keri Kaczor, Environmental Literacy and Workforce Development Program Manager at the Maine Sea Grant College Program, joins us to highlight Signs of the Seasons, a community science program that engages volunteers in observing plant and animal phenology, or the study of seasonal life events like when birds make their nests in the spring, when berries ripen in the summer, and when leaves change color in the autumn.

Ruth Kermish-Allen, Ph.D., the Executive Director of Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance, will discuss citizen science in the context of integrating innovative technologies with place-based environmental education in K-12 classroom settings. Ruth began her career as a forest ecologist and then decided to merge her love of ecology with her passion for teaching as she completed an M.Ed. in science and environmental education at the University of Maine. She completed her Ph.D. in Environmental Studies with a focus in STEM education at Antioch University New England.
